First of all, Departure was an awesome movie. Leo was great in Departure, and Martin was an excellent director obviously. Perhaps Departure was too stunning and captivating, with awards left and right, audiences' expectation got too high for Shutter Island. The general review was definitely not as great as Departure's; but then again, most movies' weren't. I thought Scorsese did a great job, personally. The script was well-written, most of the actors were well-cast and convincing (except for Mark Ruffalo, he is a terrible actor.), overall it was definitely captured my attention through out the whole movie. The dramatization and the level of suspense were well executed. The music was especially extraordinary, and worked magnificently with the movie's overall tone. If you enjoy dramas and suspense, Shutter Island definitely will satisfy your cravings.
Note of warnings: If you want to see it for Leo, then you might get a bit disappointed. He looks a bit on the heavy side, and due to the plot and his character, he constantly looked exhausted and worn out, so he really did not look that great.
